The magic of color

Take a look around you. What is the common theme you see?

Everything has a color! There is color everywhere you look and whether you’re aware of it or not, it’s effecting your emotions and state of mind. Psychological tests have found that people associate colors with specific moods. (How crazy is that?!) For example, the tests have found that the color blue is associated with feelings of safety and well-being, whereas purple is most often associated with wisdom and extravagance.

Color Scheme is one of the most essential parts of event planning and interior design. It’s almost always one of the first topics that I discuss with my clients. Why? Because the colors they choose have different energies and create different atmospheres for their guests.

What color almost instantly pops into your head when you think of a beautiful bride walking down the aisle or a newborn getting christened? I bet it’s definitely not black! Or have you ever walked into a spa and saw hot pink and bright red walls? Probably not. And if you did, I can almost guarantee that your deep tissue massage wasn’t as relaxing as you would have liked it to be.

Organizing Your Desk

So everyone has heard of spring cleaning, but what about fall cleaning?!  The holidays are coming up and before the chaos starts, wouldn’t it be nice to get a little slice of your everyday life in order.  No, I’m not talking about your closet, I’m talking about your home desk.  You know that table or corner you set-up determined to stay organized with your incoming bills, coupons, and shopping lists, well in the rush of everyday life, it might have gotten a little out of order.

Step number one – think about your desk in quadrants, a working space, a paper space, a utensil space, and a light space.  Now divide it up – your working space should be largest section in the middle where you’ll lay your laptop and have room to write notes and pay bills.

Your paper space should be kept clean with a desktop file divider.  Separate sections for bills, coupons, notes, etc. and keep things in their allotted spaces by cleaning and updated your papers at the end of each month.

The second area you’ll need to create is for your desk utensil essentials – pens, pencils, tape, […]

Potted Window Plants

With all of the flowers that are blooming outside, why not bring the outdoors in with some beautiful potted window plants.  There are several plants that can be grown in pots on the inside of your window sill that do not require a lot of maintenance and can add a pop of life to even the dreariest of days.

Some of my go-to’s for indoor plants are herbs like basil, mint, and flat-leaf parsley.  These are all herbs that you can use in your everyday cooking and they grow and regrow quickly, plus they are easy to care for.  You can purchase basic terra cotta pots and trays for each separate herb and then decorate them according to each herb or to the décor in your kitchen.  You’ll want to stay away from keeping chives or peppermint in the house if you have any critters running around, as they are poisonous to some animals if they are ingested.

One of my favorite indoor flowers are African violets.  They only need to be watered once a week and continually bloom throughout the year in bright colors like pink and purple.  They are easy to take care of and always a beautiful outcome.  […]

Does Your Home Tell Your Story?

Storytelling

Did you ever meet someone for the first time and in less than 15 minutes you knew their whole life story (how she grew up with a step mother and 2 step sisters, went to the ball, lost her shoe -poor girl, found her prince, and is now living her happily ever after). Some people are great storytellers! But there’s another way we can know someone else’s story that requires little to no words at all.

Have you guessed it? I’ll help you out- it’s simply by walking into their home or rather that’s how it should be. Think about it, our homes are an extension of ourselves. Not only does our sweet abode tell a story about how we live, but it also tells a story of who we are. The way we decorate, the furniture we buy, the scents we use and the music we play in our homes are all outer expressions of our inner selves.

When my friends and family walk into my home, they immediately get a sense of who I am – a spiritual and fun lover of all things beautiful. Fresh flowers, Buddha statues, anything vintage and everything that sparkles. (What a mix!) Even when […]

My Garden

Here are some quick photos taken of my back yard oasis BEFORE I power washed the deck & planted this past spring/summer. As you can see I use mostly neutral tones in whites, grays & greens and let the colors of the flowers be my pop of color. I loved the weathered look of most of the accessories, with an occasional touch of a crisp accents such as the green chairs & throw pillows. Together they create that perfect feel of lived in Luxury. Unfortunately I didn’t get to take the after photos with the planted flowers because I got wrapped up in shooting the show BUT you will see bits and pieces of it on “Dina’s Party”. My team and I used this space most of the summer to plan our events. It was so nice to be able to work at home surrounded by everything that makes me happy!

If you notice my water fall WAS filled with beautiful colorful Koi fish UNTIL a HUGE bird ( what I still think was a Pterodactyl ) swooped in and not only ate them, but murdered my innocent frogs as […]
